Title: Official New Forum Questions, Problems & Suggestions Thread
Post by: ~Souza~ on July 22, 2011, 04:44:21 AM
Okay, so the board is up again, although it's pretty possible I will have to disable it again tonight. I am busy with a new forum install and I want to import all the data, but since it is a different platform, I have to convert it. This forum has 12 million records, so you understand that that takes time and after that it isn't even sure the board is doing what it should.

I did a convert last night and all the posts are transfered, plus users, but it didn't get the pm's right. Besides that, I have to make some setting changes etc. Nevertheless you should be able to log in there and see if you like using it. It is still a mess, and some posts have huge fonts, but try not to look at that, like I said, it still needs work.

The url is: <!-- m -->http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0 (http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0)<!-- m -->

Just browse a little through it or post, but remember that whatever you post there, will most certainly be deleted again with the conversion tonight, so don't use it to post important stuff, leave that here.

I have to go to work, so I'll leave you to it. Let me know your opinion on the forum and if you think you can get used to it.

If the pm's are not showing here, they are not converted. I don't know why, it only had problems with the pm's. It should show new ones though.

For your old ones, you can view them at the old board when I put it back up.

I'm curious - this doesn't look or feel like the old site at all. The name isn't even on here...at least I can't find it. If someone comes into this site they won't know what it's necessarily about. Is that the intention or will you be putting the name to clearly identify what this web address it about? The old site had a more professional look to it but I realize it will take some getting used to.

Thank you for all of your hard work. Blessings :)

Hi! I was just wondering if this new forum will have the "new posts" button like that last one. That really helped me keep up with all the latest. Or, if there is a button on here which directs to me something like that, please let me know.

The forum is impressive!

the closest thing I can find to that is "view unread", threads that you either have not looked at all or have had a new post since you last looked at it will be there.  ;)

it's at the top of the page, on your gray bar that has your avatar/name/posts,etc.
its hard to describe where it's at, but if you can't find it, let me know and ill just make a screenshot.

It will only display the original post on a thread and the first reply. If you click a page (say in a 7 page thread, click page 3) it will only show the top 2 posts on that page. This started last night (12hrs ago) for me.

Souza I'm dying!

I can relate to your experiences as well, Bec. I even had a bizarre post that showed up on this forum when I orgininally posted on michaeljacksonfakeddeath.com some months ago.  :o

This is quite confusing. and a bit creepy....

I'm sure that it was very important for Souza to make this change. And this is going to save the forum from getting hacked. I can't say that I'm loving it at the moment but I'm sure that I will get used to it soon. Wish I could see where trending topics are like I did on the old forum. And we lost the smileys. Sorry for the whining, I know this had to be done. I'm just not ok with it at the moment.
Title: Re: Official New Forum Questions, Problems & Suggestions Thread
Post by: bec on July 23, 2011, 10:52:19 AM
It's not working properly for me. I can only see the OP and one reply on any topic I click. The Recent Posts at the bottom of the index page is great but I cannot go to the post, if I click it I get sent, again, to the OP and one reply, even on threads that have hundreds of replies.

I'm a little freaked out, disoriented, and frustrated. There's no "view first unread" so I have no idea where to pick up reading in a thread like the TIAI's or the BACK thread, not that I can read anything besides the OP and the first reply... I'm lost and have no idea what's going on anymore. I'm having to go proxy at .net just to get my fix and keep up on current events. Gahhhhh!

Souza... I'm dying here... and it's slow and agonizing.

[Hi Souza, I agree with most of the members, it feels like a maze looking for posts, and also when we reply, it is so small, very hard to read.  The other forum when you wanted to logout, there was the appropriate button LOGOUT, now when I want to logout I can't . If I am forwarding my opinion, it is not to be mean, but to facilitate our searches. We love you Souza for taking your time to do this for us. Blessings.

It's definitely different and a change from the other forum. What I've noticed is that the quick reply button doesn't seem to work for me. I also miss seeing the personalized forum that clearly marked this site as a Michael Jackson forum. Now it seems very generic. I hope this isn't the final product.

at the moment i am not sure if the idea that everyone else is as lost as i am is a good thing or a bad thing :D  i have managed my way around to look at a few things and post a little.
it would be really lovely if i could get my signature pic back and figure out how to log out. (as i have mentioned in another post) :D ;) the biggest thing for me is i don't feel too comfortable poking around in the profile section .
i think souza also wanted things to be a little better organized and that way also a motivation for the change. however i am not so sure if some of us don't actually function better in a more caotic setting. :-\ , but  i think souza has said this is not the finished product so we wait.
seems like what we do best lately anyway doesn't it.

Souza certainly will get rid of those first hand issues and we will adapt to where to find the right button.

Layout is one thing, functions are another one.
Some important aspects are hidden from users in the background like database, server traffic and security.

I agree that the old forum was nice looking and easy to handle.
I trust Souza entirely. She for sure had very good reasons for the change and not only layout related ones.
Let's not forget that our posts and reports are our most valuable and precious capital.
Any measure in securing this from getting lost is right with me.

Blessings and patience to all (I still cannot log out - statistics will all go wrong today LOL)

Post by: ~Souza~ on July 23, 2011, 06:43:44 PM
You know what it is guys? I can never do it the right way for all of you. Some want it all, and that simply can't be done. I agree that the old board looks better (still), but it had problems that you couldn't see. It was slowing down the database in a way no one could explain, since the server is fast as hell. It was hacked before and lately I had trouble getting into the admin panel, the mods and myself were unable to edit or delete posts and I did not rust the installation anymore, that is why I decided to move it to another software program as soon as possible. The old board is still working, but I will lock it as an archive.

It took me 12 hours to convert all the posts to the new software and I have a 40 hour a week job, plus I am trying to start a business. My time is limited, but I already opened this forum so that you all would be able to keep up again and post. The lay-out is really not on my priority list, I first want the errors fixed. During a conversion it might be that some things get fucked up, because you are dealing with 2 different software programs. That is why the pm's might not display as they should. I will be able to fix some things, but it might also be possible that we just have to find out some tricks for other things.

This is a fisrt install. All I did was change the menu, added a logo and imported the converted posts. I simply did not have time yet for other things. Main concern was to get it up and running. You can whine about the lay-out or the functions that are different on here, but I remember members reacted the same when I locked MJKIT and opened the previous board. You will get used to it if you would only try. But seriously, the last thing I can use at the moment is complaints about the lay-out. What do you want? a nice looking forum that is slow and might get deleted any minute, or a less nice looking one that is a shit ton faster and secured? You tell me. Also, for your information: I worked three days on the lay-out of the previous board, so believe me, I wish I could have converted it too, but I can't. I have to deal with that. When I have more time on my hands, I might work on a new theme for this one, but not now. For now, just post the actual problems you are experiencing (like that log out button that I will fix) or any other problems. I will update you in this thread, so I will make this a sticky.

For now, to answer some questions on here or in pm:

IP addresses can only be seen by yourself, me and the mods. Same goes for email addresses, but you can to change your profile settings yourself if you want to hide it. Maybe I can set it as default, but I have to get used to the new admin board too, so bear with me. If you don't want it to be seen by others, change it.

Lay-out: see above

Recent posts, first unread post: I will probably have to install a module for that. I have more modules I have to add, like the ability to post YouTubes etc, so I will see what I can do, but please be patient. Although some might think differently, I really am just 1 person, with only 24 hours in a day, a job and also sort of a social life.

Log-out funvtion: will fix that later on. It is indeed as mentioned on MJ's head in the logo for now.

Attachments seem to be not working, will check that out. Might be set to disabled. If so, I will have to see if I will enable it, because attachments are slowing down a server when there are that many as on the old board. There are other ways to post an image, maybe we can open a photogallery where everyone can upload their attachments to post them on here. I will think about that.

PM's: You should be able to send and receive new ones. The old ones are (just like the posts up until July 22) still on the old board. When I have enabled the board again, you will be able to view them there. The old board can be found in the menu on top under archives.

@bec: it seems that you are the only one with that 2-posts-problem. I will message you on msn.

That said I have to say that although it might need some time and work, this forum is very user friendly and I have found some very nice features that can be added. I will all have to check them out still, but when everything is installed and working, I will make a post about how to use the forum and the features. All I need is some time and patience.

My request:

If you see posts that look strange (bb-codes fucked up like images or links, huge fonts etc, report the post to moderator and I will fix it. Also, use this thread for actual problems you experience as in functions, not lay-out. Lastly, suggestions are always welcome, but I am not superwoman and we are dealing with a free software program, which means that we can't have it all and most of all, it's impossible to please everyone. After the complaints about the previous board back in November 2009, I think we can all get used to this one as well. And I even think that in the end, most will be more happy with this one.

Fixed. Thanks Souza.

But what I told you is true, so long as the board is online I am happy. So... I am happy. Without you I would be unhappy.

Another "fix": The problem with the images from other servers (not attachments, but the [img] ones) are not showing up because the conversion changed something in the url. If you want your signature back, simply add the ":" after http and before "//".

I can relate to your experiences as well, Bec. I even had a bizarre post that showed up on this forum when I orgininally posted on michaeljacksonfakeddeath.com some months ago.  :o

This is quite confusing. and a bit creepy....

Souza, you are right you cannot please everyone, we all gave suggestions so it would make it easier for all of us. Sometimes suggestions are limited, I understand that. I would like to congratulate you for opening a business. I wish you the best of luck. Blessings.

Ps. Still having problems with Firefox. It loads fine on Safari but Firefox is a no go. If I clear my cache and cookies I can load one page. Any additional page has the same only loading 2 replies and never the rest of the page issue.

I ran Adaware and uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. No luck.

Perhaps it's a sign that I need a new hobby.

Souza, I'm sure this is a huge job for you so I'm also sure you wouldn't have undertaken it without good reason. I really don't want to be negative about what you've done, but to be honest I don't understand why you felt the need for such an enormous change, that initial impressions lead me to think is not for the better.

As others have said, it's a maze, whereas the old style, that you'd already done a great job on, was 'a-maze-ing'!

If there are still further changes to be made here please can I put a call out for the old 'View New Posts' button, the little red 'go to first new post' button and a 'Logout' button.

On the plus side, I got loads of gardening done yesterday!

I leave for a few days, and then I come back and my home has disappeared. I will honestly try to look at this as a huge opportunity for our forum to grow and become better, and try to keep moving forward grateful, that at least we have a forum, and at least we have an administrator who actually cares enough to continually try to make our beloved forum the best it can be. But man, I miss our old forum. I really do, everything was so neat and welcoming, it felt like home.  I understand that this new one isn't all the way here yet, there is still a lot of work to be done and I am grateful for Souza that she is working on it. But I'm saddened that we had to move, but that is all I'm going to say, I will keep moving forward, because that is the best thing to do. What is done is done. Now lets jump on this new forum with excitement and happiness. Now my signature picture didn't come through, and some html stuff didn't either also on my signature. I can't seem to figure out how to edit my signature to fix it. Help, please? Thanks very much!

In the first few days I missed the old forum terribly, and felt like everything was going to fall apart. But I am getting used to this new place, because I love the family here, regardless of the building. Because I don't know the whole situation on the troubles Souza had and forsaw with the old one, I hope that you Souza are also happier with this new one. So thank you for your devotion to this place and group, since you really didn't have to care at all. My worst fear is it vanishing altogether, so if this site is more secure I'm all for it. I hope everyone comes back here, and jumps in the discussions with their insights and thoughts to make this place lively and the number 1 MJ-hoax site once again!     Nice that TS and Front have taken note of it!

I'd glad to see the "new posts" back up there. Is it possible to have it at the bottom of the page as well?
You said the video posting would be coming soon I think, I hope.
Also just wondering if our posts will always be in these boxes that have to sometimes be moved this way and that to see all of it?

Thanks again! :)

@Grace who PMed me, thanks for trying to help, I did follow the suggestions on the link you provided and uninstalled and reinstalled 3.6 version Firefox but there's no change. I cannot view the forum with Firefox, period. I couldn't even view your PM on the board (only via the alert email I got) and I cannot reply to your PM either.

I'm really pretty annoyed and pissed. I appreciate your help and I appreciate everything that Souza does and I know this change was necessary for the future of the forum, not for my own personal convenience. Full respect and appreciation for you Souza as without you our playground and our mission would be unrealized.

But it fucking SUCKS that I have to use a completely different shitty browser for only this site. Every other site gives me no trouble. I feel like throwing the PC out the window. I feel like whining and bitching and bemoaning my troubles. I feel like a big baby.

It also seems I am the only one with this problem.

This same problem happened with the original MJHD.com for a time, back in the day when AMY was constantly trying to work out bugs n hacks and all that jazz. I could only view the top 2 replies then too, it's like if I have to scroll it doesn't exist. Weird and paranoia inducing.

I'm glad, really, that I am the only one with the problem. If it was widespread we could kiss the hoax investigation goodbye. I can't imagine everyone is as addicted to the site as I am. I'll jump through hoops, even flaming ones, but ima bitch about it  argue/

The main problem I have is the layout - it's really hard to see where one post ends and the next one begins, which makes reading the posts quite hard. I hope you can change that in the future.

For those having problems with the font size being too small, I don't know about other browsers, but in Firefox try "Ctrl +". Or go to "View" and "Zoom". You can change the font size yourself.

Bec, could you google for the issue please?
It could be an issue from your Firefox profile that is not properly working with other Firefox files. This is just a guess from what I checked so far. As I don't know your PC settings, I suggest you search the web to find the answer corresponding to your issues. The error / bug in general is being described by others as well.

Hope you can get back on board soon without that frustrating situation.

I'm sure that we will all get used to this one. But to me 'View Active Posts' and 'New and Unread Posts' is a must like it was on the old forum. It's too hard to check out all the threads to find out where you posted before and to see the new posts. So that is what we need on this forum I think. The smileys can be add later when Souza have time. No urgency for them as well as the layout. No problem with the layout if you ask me actually. But it would be amazing if Souza can add this 'View Active Posts' 'View New and Unread Posts' stuff asap. Thank you for the great work Souza and keeping it safe for us all.  :-*

@bec

Hope you can fix the problem soon girl. Love You and need you here.

I'm afraid to do something wrong and since this site is the ONLY site I am having a problem with I frankly give up. I can read recent posts at the bottom of the screen but I can't go through a thread. I tried increasing my cache, it was already over 100, I put it to 1500, didn't do anything.

Actually if you zoom enough to cut out the orange borders, the posts become much easier to read. The contrast is not enough with the bright orange colour. So all those who are having problems with reading the posts, either view Zoom or press the CTRL + or use the CTRL +scroll button to zoom in.
Title: Re: Official New Forum Questions, Problems & Suggestions Thread
Post by: simalves on July 24, 2011, 09:26:39 PM
@bec, that means it was your cache that was full, and now it is okay :) 100 was too little actually.

And for those who are asking, the unread threads are bolded, so you can easily see which thread you missed.

I like this the best of all http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0/index.php?action=recent;start=0

@Souza, thanks for everything, I know I did not whine, but I am sorry I did not say anything nice either. I know this is going to be better than the earlier one, so lets all be patient, and complain only after everything is done. Till then just suggestions are welcome, not demands.

Same goes for email addresses, but you can to change your profile settings yourself if you want to hide it. Maybe I can set it as default, but I have to get used to the new admin board too, so bear with me. If you don't want it to be seen by others, change it.

I do so but nothing happened. My setting is "send me emails - NO" - but still the adress is shown. I hope you can change this in the admin settings.

It only shows for you and me, not other members. I can't seem to set it as default, you all have to change it yourself in your profile settings. Same as the current time.

I am making a few different layouts so that you all can pick the best suitable for you. Plus I have to find a new mobile one.

Little more patience please.

Seems that the theme did not allow users to hide their email addresses, so I set it to another theme. Boring maybe, but for now it works perfectly.

I will update on the rest later.

Just a quick note for those that can't wait: I have found the 'view first unread post' button.

Go to unread posts, which is the same as the list you got at the phpbb forum, then click on the 'new' button.

Voila!

Thanks, easier to maneuver now.  I DO like the blue background too, easy on the eyes, whether it's permanent or not, nice for now.  It's all coming together nicely, of course.  Wish I coulda been some help.  Great job...

Interesting. Apparently if I come here under a proxy, it works just fine. Default proxy I can only read 2 replies and the rest of the page doesn't load. Different proxy=no problems.

Wtf???

in the "unread posts since last visit" section - is it possible to include the original date that a subject was started - for example under subject it lists the subject title followed by "started by (screen name)  in (forum subject)".  this would help me to determine if the subject is new material or old news.  Thank you ~ the site looks great!

Thank you! That works for me! Phew!

One other question. How do you find the threads that you've posted in? (other than show new replies to your posts) For instance, I read your response in this thread, then went back to the index board. Then I wanted to respond to this thread, but it no longer showed up when I clicked on "new replies", because I had already read it.  I had to click back several times on my browser to find it. Does that make sense?

I understand that you can search for key words, but often times I don't know the exact name of the thread to do a search. Thank you for your patience in helping us get familiar with the new forum.

Never mind that post either....I was wrong again.  :'(  This new forum makes me feel like a bonehead.....and I normally can troubleshoot/figure things out fairly easily.  Where's that smashing the computer icon?  Lol!

Everything's looking better all the time!  :)
Just wondering-- is there a way to change the time to my time?  I don't see it in my profile.
And are all the old pics/videos posted in threads- gone forever?
Title: Re: Official New Forum Questions, Problems & Suggestions Thread
Post by: anewfan on July 25, 2011, 02:12:16 PM
Okay....I think I figured a semi-easier way to find posts that you haven't read. (not just those since your last visit)

1. Click view new posts since last visit
2. Go to the bottom of page.....on the bottom right it says "view all unread posts" (it's a dark gray button right next to a button that says "mark all posts read")

That will get you a list of all the threads that have posts that you haven't read.

 :) Hopefully this helps.

off topic: why when you use the quote button you get the quick reply window with no options and on the reply button you get all the perks and now quote? makes it difficult. sorry to piss and moan souza but i don't get it.

hey, instead of using Quote button, just go to Replay button and use Insert Quote tab, that you still have in all of the posts in the thread :)

thank you.  got to get used to extra things showing up at the bottom of the page.  ;D

since i am here i have a question for souza. it seems like it is possible that you are working on some aspects of the program during certain times of the day , which bring on delays and so on. would it be best if as a temporay measure when sort took it easy during say certain hours while you are trying to finish things up ?  or are the delays ect. just part of the deal that we need to get used to? hope i am making sense  ??? :-[ :-\

Plus, I'd have ask in chat..but where's that?

hi ford!  i think some of the stuff is disappearing and reappearing simply because souza  is still tweeking ( either that or she has gotten into magic  :) ) so it might go on for a while, maybe . that is my theory anyway. :D

Any reason why Facebook videos won't embed? I tried the trick that was posted earlier with tweaking the link, but that didn't work. It is just a big white square on one of my posts.

I love that all the smilies are back! Thank you!

I'm thinking maybe having all that stuff on the sides made each page load slower. You have to click at the top to get them now. If that is the reason, I think it's an improvement, because it was unbearably slow before, for me and not now! Thanks to Souza!
