Title: The new forum, please read.
Post by: ~Souza~ on July 25, 2011, 02:27:36 PM

For those who have no clue why the forum has changed, I will explain it again. The old board had issues with the installation. I even re-installed it a few times and no luck. The admin panel was not always available to me, and the mods had issues deleting, moving or locking posts. The forum was also very slow lately and it could take 8 seconds or longer to load a page, where this one loads it in 0.1 seconds. It annoyed me and other members, so it was time for a new software program. This board, powered by smf (simple machines forum) seemed reliable, fast and best of all: I was able to copy all the posts and users via a simple conversion program. This board works perfectly for me, and is fast. Modifications can be automatically installed, without me having to edit the codes, which takes a lot of time. Below the changes/explainations of new features. I will add more later on. If you have any questions, please reply in this thread, because I will lock the previous one to keep it all clear for everyone. I hope we will all get used to the new board, but I have no doubt that we will. Because it's so speedy, I will be able to add more features that will make this board very user-friendly.

Layout

As you all have seen, I have set the forum to a new layout. This is actually the default layout of smf2.0, which I altered a little for now, so that we have the orange back and a logo. The logo is just a temp one, I made one quickly, but as I have too little time at hand, I will open another thread to ask the photoshop experts and other creative people to design one, and have the members pick the best one later on in a poll. That way I can focus on the technical part. I think the forum layout like this is the most clear and easy to navigate, so I will not change it anymore. So this will be it, with the exception of the banner on top. If the forum is still blue for you, simply press F5 or empty your cache.

Email addresses

The issue with the email addresses shown is fixed as well with this layout, which means guests can't see your email address anymore. If you don't want your email address to be shown to the other users you have to change that yourself; go to profile -> Account settings and uncheck the box 'Allow users to email me'. I have tried to set that as default, but it seems that it's not possible, so if you want it hidden, change it yourself.

View new posts

View new posts is different from the old board. Because this is a different software program, I simply can't duplicate the old board. If you want to view new posts, Click on the link next to your avatar (or under 'Hello [username] if you don't have one) that says 'Show unread posts since last visit.'.

You will get a list of active topics and next to the thread title, there is a button 'new'. If you click that button, you will be redirected to the first unread post in that thread.

Calendar

A new option in this forum is the calendar, which I think is very useful. You will find it at the bottom of the index page (click the icon) or in the menu on top. You can post a new event (such as hearings in the Murray case) and you have the option to link the event to a post. It will ask you where you want to post it, and after confirmation, you will get a screen for a new topic. So let's say that TMZ posts an article that announces a new date for a hearing, post it as a calendar event: Go to calender -> post event -> check 'Link event to post' -> post in 'TMZ Articles' and click 'post'. You will now get the screen where you can post the topic with the article.

You can also link an exsisting topic to the calendar. On the bottom of the thread you will find a button 'Link to calendar'. You will get a screen with the original post and all you have to do is give the event a title and set the date(s). That way people that watch the calender, can click the event and they will be redirected to the post that has the information in it.

Smilies

As you can see, I have already added two of the old smilies to make sure I could. I will add the rest later on, since I have to add them manually.

PM's

As I explained before, the pm's might not have been transferred as they should. If you don't have your old pm's in your inbox, you can check them at the old board. I will enable the board later on, lock it and post a link to it, for those who want to read those old posts.

The default settings for the viewing of pm's is kinda strange, so to be able to have your recent ones on top, I advise you to change the settings in your profile as follows:

Profile -> Modify profile -> Personal Messaging and set it like the example below:

This way you will get the most recent pm on top which is much clearer.

Mobile Phones

I have installed a theme for mobile phones. First of all, it looks better than the one on the old board, and secondly: you don't have to change the theme yourself. If you go to the forum from your mobile phone, the board automatically will set the theme to mobile for you.

Font size

Some said that the font size of the forum is too small. I added a module that allows you to zoom it. On top of the board, in the right corner on the orange background, you will see a + and a -. Click + to zoom, and - to zoom out again.

Signatures/images not showing

If your signature is not showing, it is because the conversion screwed up the url. In mine for example, it deleted the : between http and //. If your signature does not show, check the url and change it to the complete url. Sometimes the url is complete and simply re-confirming will do the trick.

Videos not showing

I installed the bbcode for youtube videos, so you are able to post videos again. The posts from the old board though, are not showing. Same problem as the signature settings, the link of the bbcode was changed, and in some cases (most recent ones) it simply has a wrong bbcode because I installed the advanced bbcodes on the old board. If there are members who are willing to help out and fix those codes, please let me know. If you bump into a post like that, simply report it and I will fix it.

Forum in different language

Another extra feature on this board is that you can set the language of the board (not the posts) to your own. It was also possible on the phpbb board, but in a way it didn't work very well and it was not easy to install. Could have been a bug in the installation. Now it is very easy for me to install them, so if your language is not in the list as explained below, let me know in this thread and I will add it for you. To change the language go to: Profile -> Account settings and you will find a drop-down list with the currently available languages. I think this is of use for members that are not very familiar with the English language and have problems adjusting to the new forum.

Your Profile

Please look at your profile settings before posting any problems that might be solved within your own settings. If it's not all clear, simply ask me, or use the link on top that says 'Help'.

More features

I will be checking for other extra features and will add and explain them in this thread, so if you want to stay up-to-date, simply click the button 'notify' on top of this thread, or if you reply to this thread, expand 'attachments and other options' and check 'Notify me of replies' if you don't have that as default setting in your profile and you will receive an email notification on new posts in this topic.

This looks great.  Thank for all that you do to keep this place going for us.   :D  I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I couldn’t come here at least once a day.  It’s familiar.  It’ feels like home.

Great summary Souza, thanks.

Any idea why I can only view the forum properly on a proxy?

I have no clue. You seem to be the only one with this problem, which seems to be a caching problem. You should see if you have a computer geek nearby who can help you out with it. Did you delete cache/cookies/press F5 again? Go through all of that again, it might work.

Well you know I do, lol, but I can't burn all my favors.

Tried all that just now and I can see 3 posts with an empty cache, wooo! Nope, back on proxy. Whateves. Minor nuisance. I'm still happy.

That proves that it is a cache problem of your browser. Can you install Safari?

It's installed but it's poopy. On proxy it works fine on Firefox. If I had a cache problem wouldn't I stall have the same problem on a proxy in the same browser? I don't know, I'm just trying to use logic. I know normal logic does not apply to PCs hahahaha. Ugh.

Don't worry about me, I'm all good, I'm just forever be mysteriously incognitoooooo lol. If I can't load at all you'll hear from me. Trust me. Lol.

Another thing: If you are a member of the Army of Love, you should set that as defaul group yourself in your profile field. I can't set that as default. Go to Profile -> modify profile -> group membership.

Also, if you want your time settings different from the default forum time (which is UTC), also go to your profile -> modify profile -> look and layout. You can auto detect at Time Offset, but you can also manually change it. For example: California is UTC -7, so in that case you type in -7 and save.

I'm not sure why but I didn't have to do anything to keep my Army of Love membership, my name just became red this afternoon - not complaining though!  I'm happy about that!

The find new posts was really the only link I ever used previousy so to have that back (I think, I haven't even checked lol) is a real bonus.  I don't know how you manage to keep everything going here, hold down a full time job and actually have a life of your own - all credit to you  :D

Hi Souza. Um, I have a question ? I never really go into the 'chatroom' and a friend of mine asked me to go in it, so I went. When I went in, I didnt even write anything and I was being told to fuck off and get a life. By "katie" and "dfilipad" or something like that. & they were telling me I was helen with a different name? I told them that I wasn't this person, and they still told me to 'get the fuck out' and called me a bitch and other names. Then I was banned by "amnesiac" or something like that. I don't even know what I did or who these rude people were, can you please do something about this? :-\

Crap...this totally quit working for me.  First...the page froze.  So I tried to reload.  It went from blue to orange, but took 5 min to load up.  Then I had a warning repeating down the side of the page repeating down the side saying to contact admin data error (I did screen shot it).  The shout out box never came up.  I reloaded my browser...same thing..never loaded the page.  My other pages did though.  I tried to get in through an email link, by typing it in, by my app at on the browser.  Finally 5 min it came up.  The shout out box repeated my msgs..and never emptied out my msgs after sending.  Still have that data warning on pages, and it takes 3 min. to load a page.
I'm sorry Souza...I'm not complaining .. I told you how great the changes are...I just need to know what to do to fix it.  When it froze, it never came back the same.  It went to orange and totally messed up for me.
My cache is clear cuz I fixed that with your advise a couple weeks ago.
Did I ...I don't think I did anything...I just left my page up as I always do...

I installed a package to the forum that clearly slowed down the database in an extreme way. When I wanted to uninstall it, it gave errors, so I had to uninstall it manually by editing the codes. All should work again perfectly now. It sucks because it was a great function, but I will find an alternative.

Is it about the shoutbox also? It seems like it is not working no more. But the forum is fast again which is good. :D

No, has nothing to do with the shoutbox. It works for me. Refresh your page using F5, that might help.

Okay, new update:

As you all have seen, I installed a homepage for the forum (click 'home' in the menu) where you can find active/new posts and all kind of features, and I set the sideblocks for the forum as well. Just browse it and check it out.

Another update is the gallery (again in the menu) where we can create albums. I am going to disable attachments, since they are not working anyway, so this is a great alternative. I will set up some categories, but let me know if you would like to have another one added for your upload. Once uploaded, everyone can use the bbcode for that picture to post in the forum, instead of uploading an attachment.

It is still a test though, because if it will slow down the forum when more files are uploaded, I will have to delete it again. So far it's running, so let's hope it stays that way.

I will work on the smilies next.

That would be great! I will set the permissions for you to edit posts right away. Just walk through them and edit the wrong codes (YouTube, images etc.) to the right codes. Or edit them if you bump into posts with errors. Large fonts are set to 99px, they should be edited to 14px, because they make the board way too wide. Anyways, you will be fine. PM me if you need more info.

Another function added: the blog function, as we had on the old board. In your personal menu on the left (top), you will now see "My blog". If you click this you will enter your personal blog page, in which you can blog whatever you want. Before you can post a new blog though (on the right side), you will have to create a category for the blog you are going to post. As it's your own blog, you can make as many categories and blogs if you like. To view all blogs, click on 'blogs' in the menu.

When I posted just now, the 'modify' button was not there.

I was finding it hard to see all the new posts when if I had briefly been on a site and wanted to go back, it was already marked as read, so it didn't show. So I finally discovered that if I clicked on the 'Michael Jackson Death Hoax Investigators', then I could get the complete 'Last Topics' list whether I had been on one of them or not.
Is it possible to have the link always at the top for 'Last Topics'?

When I posted just now, the 'modify' button was not there.

I was finding it hard to see all the new posts when if I had briefly been on a site and wanted to go back, it was already marked as read, so it didn't show. So I finally discovered that if I clicked on the 'Michael Jackson Death Hoax Investigators', then I could get the complete 'Last Topics' list whether I had been on one of them or not.
Is it possible to have the link always at the top for 'Last Topics'?
Thanks!

The last posts are on the homepage. If I add them to the forum view, it will become unclear.

And the modify button is disabled, just like on the old board. Some members simply took advantage of it and deleted important topics/posts by editing them.

And another feature added: YouTube embedding.

You will be asked to enter your YouTube channel name (name only, not the whole link, for example, mine is SouzicalTheMusical). You don't have to, you can also delete this notification without adding your profile. If you change your mind, you can always add it later via Profile -> Forum profile -> Actions.

It will add all your videos in your youtube account on here (embedded, they will not be uploaded) and you can add any video you want to the gallery, which can be viewed by clicking 'Youtube Gallery' in the menu.

New bbcode added: embedded facebook videos (see facebook icon next to image icon when posting a message)

Note! You should not put the whole link between the [facebook][/facebook] tag, you need to edit it:

If this is the url of the video for example:

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=257703937579381

You will put the following between the tags to make sure the video will actually show:

http://www.facebook.com/v/257703937579381

New bbcode: Float.  Let's you wrap text around images emulating the float: right/left (green arrows next to font face). Usefull when posting topics or blog posts with images.

Added bbcode: post .pdf files (next to images). With this function you can include .pdf files that are somewhere on a server (no upload!). For example, this is the DC posted by TMZ as .pdf and instead of linking to the document, I have included it in the post to view and download: http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0/index.php/topic,17659.msg301917.html#msg301917

Lots of good stuff added.  Thanks so much for your efforts Souza!  I am having a bit of trouble with modifying my profile.  My avatar transferred over from the old site, but when I went into the modifying profile, I lost it. :(  Now I can't upload it or any others that I have on my hard drive, as it says the file is too large or something else is wrong.  Can't seem to add sig either.  My ARMY of L.O.V.E. designation is gone too.  :( :(  How do I get this all working again.....when you have a moment.  Thanks! ;)

The sig should be fine if you edit the code, the url for your pic should be surrounded by [img ]http://pic url[ /img]. You're missing the "/" in the last[/img] as it's showing up in your sig now.

Yours says:
[img ]http://pic url[ img]

It should be:
[img ]http://pic url[ /img]

(without the spaces, I added them to make the code visible)

The rest is over my head, let's wait for Souza.

I hope this will be the right thread to post difficulties with the new forum in. The speed of loading pages is a pain. I think it's the addendums that are hampering IMHO. I don't appreciate the "join us" cursor. I want to check the forum also without being logged in and this is just hmmmm. Is it feasible to get the edit button for posts back, please, since the preview destroys all my formats and the text is barely legible. The "reformatting" happened when there was a warning in the sense  of "new post while you were typing" - so my posting process was interrupted, I had to press "post" a second time and the result can be seen below. I would like to make the post more suitable for human beings' eyes but I cannot edit anymore since the edit button has disappeared completely. It might be the case that some folks delete their posts because they change their mind. That is not so terrible IMO. I am re-thinking my phrases all the time. I think it is more positive and contributing to quality to allow editing for some time than to block it completely. There might be a damage to the forum when new members search for an edit button they are used to on other boards and don't find it here. This will withhold people from posting at all. Thanks to all. This an example of layout misfit after preview / posting: http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0/index.php/topic,19921.msg345279.html#msg345279 (http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com/smf2.0/index.php/topic,19921.msg345279.html#msg345279)

Grace, can you screenshot your display so we can see what you mean?

I think your post is quite lovely, what do you feel is wrong with it (your linked example I mean)?

Ps. the upload speed varies when Souza is working on the forum in the background, it comes and goes in the last few days since migration, but it should be fine now, is it still slow for you?
Title: Re: The new forum, please read.
Post by: ~Souza~ on July 27, 2011, 12:11:22 AM
Well, extra features deleted from the forum, can be found at the homepage (menu). Everyone happy. Edit button is being abused many times by posters who simply deleted their whole posts, which made a mess. I am going to think about it and MAYBE put it back as a test, but that's far from a promise.

As for the speed of the forum, it's speedy here. Long thread loads in 2.2 seconds which is more than fine when you look at the size of the database. Also, the forum might be slow at times because I am working on it. In that case believe me, I will notice it as well, so no need for a hundred emails complaining about the slow forum. I can also just close it down when I am working on it, but I don't think anyone would like that.

Again, i can not please anyone and there will definitely be people disappointed. That's life, we can't all have it all. I will work on the rest of the complaints after I have been allowed to get some sleep.

Grace, can you screenshot your display so we can see what you mean?

It's the breaks that get lost. Everything is getting glued together into one text dough despite it was neatly structured before.

This happened to my post above as well.

This post is now being posted as a "Quick reply" - I think it's the interruption of the posting process that causes the breaks to disappear.

Hi Souza, I checked my profile.
The loss of breaks and of a post structure has nothing to do with my profile?

Every text being structured remains with structure only if I'm fast enough in posting and nobody comes in between me typing and me clicking on the "post" button.

When another member posted a contribution while I was typing, my posting process is getting interrupted and obviously all breaks from a "enter" and tabs etc. are lost. The text is being condensed to one paragraph only when I had several before. Same happens to photos as in the example link I gave. They are put into the text when I wanted breaks in between.

So even with preview I cannot finally say what my post will look like.
I have no explanation for this. Seems as if a temp file from preview or cache does not keep the formats.
Thanks if you have an idea.

Allow me to help: your problem indeed has to do with your profile setting.

Just go to Profile --> Account Setting --> Modify Profile --> Look and Layout.

There is a long list of features you can mark/unmark. Just check  ---> Don't warn on new replies made while posting.

I hope it will solve your problem. :)

The smileys are coming back. WoHoooooo!!! Thanks Souza and the mods.  elvis_/  bounce/

The only problem I am having is, when I quote someone's post, it has to be a quick reply. Wish we could quote the posts in normal reply fucntion because I want to use the smileys, add videos etc and in quick reply I can not see and use any of these features. Hope I could explain what I'm trying to say. It's not a big problem but this feature was better in the old forum. But the rest is AMAZING! Thanks again Souza.   bearhug

here is the answer:

instead of using Quote button, just go to Replay button and use Insert Quote tab, that you still have in all of the posts in the thread :)

Okay, image gallery is gone, it slowed down but attachments are enabled. The extra forum features can be found on the 'home' page of the board and the smilies are back. I added a lot of extra features and the bbcodes now also work in quick reply. I tried to make the forum as user friendly as possible and I think that once you all get used to it, you don't even want the old one back anymore. For me this is a much more admin friendly forum and changes can be made easier and safer. This is the forum as it will stay from here on. The logo needs to be changed, but I will open a thread for that.

There are many extra features on here, please check them out and use them. Most of them are mentioned in this thread, some you will see automatically by using the forum.

I will enable the edit/modify button for now. As soon as I see members deleting complete posts again, I will disable it again.

I hope most of you are happy with the new forum and its features, but it seems that most regular users are already quite familiar with it.

If you have any questions, let me know. Happy hoaxing!

The time zone can be set in your profile. I did that for you now.

As for the page loading, it's fast here. But can you load 10 different pages and then look at the bottom how long it took to load them and post that here?
For example, mine now says: Page created in 1.705 seconds with 14 queries.

Same answer as I gave Gema above, because it's fast for me, so I need to know how long those 10 random pages load for you. If you don't post that, I can't help.

Yes, to see how slow it is. 5 seconds for 30 database queries is not that slow. Normal pages should load between 0.5 and 3 seconds, but if that page requires a lot of database info (queries) it can happen that it's a little slower. If you can load 10 pages and tell me how many seconds per page, I can see if the forum is exceptionally slow for you. The old forum loaded in 35-40 seconds when it was busy, that's slow. 5 seconds can be dealt with.

Do you have Quick Reply on? If so, set it to 'never show' in your profile. You will be able to quote again then.

I changed some stuff in the database yesterday, so the forum speed should be fine for everyone now. It's fast for me.

I did the experiment. I opnened many pages, one was also a youtube video of a psychic talking about dead MJ...once I was going to post, the pc screen turned black and said "He is dead, Jim" afraid/ and the whole PC shutted down errrr

Once I restarted it was said that there was a memory problem  :-[ but got really freaked out  what a timing!

Still can´t see the seconds  :-[ however, the forum goes better now, faster but still i can´t quote posts.

Do you have Quick Reply on? If so, set it to 'never show' in your profile. You will be able to quote again then.

If you want quick reply & be able to quote, (because i like both) then right-click "quote" and click "open in new tab" and you'll be able to quote.  ;)
