Title: How are dead bodies identified normally?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew how dead bodies are normally identified, specifically in California if this varies by state.  i.e. in a regular non-hoax scenario, how to they determine who the deceased actually is?  

What counts as legal proof?  Identification by family member, dental records, fingerprints, DNA?  What is customary?  Does it matter if the person was pronounced dead in a hospital or elsewhere?

In the UK i know that identification is made by the next of kin  (so a family member, relative).

If identification is unable to be made by this way (such as if ID is disputed or body is in so much decay it is unrecognisable or would be too distressing for relatives to view), then DNA or dental records are used.

ok after the death in june i was watching skynews and they went to the corners office and spoke to a man there and he explained what happened he said the body was weighed ,photos taken but also fingerprints thats all i remember

I think it is generally that the people with the person when taken to the hospital identify them, so MJ would have identified by his staff or doctor at his home, and the details are provided at that time.

What is your concern?

I'M SO GLAD YOU WATCHED THIS... it's been crackin me up cos i was trying to find a link to post it for none uk people!! they also showed were he was put an where his name was on the board!!

a family member of ours was in a car accident in 1998 and my brother had to identify them!! wasn't allowed to touch them or anything just look an say YES / NO

I was just curious.  If it was standard to have DNA or fingerprints or something that could have been harder to fake.

It isnt standard to have DNA or fingerprints taken to identify a dead body.  The verbal verification of a next of kin / relative is enough.
I have not heard of DNA or fingerprints used in identification except in those cases where visual identification is impossible due to the deteriation of the corpse... in which case you wouldnt use fingerprints as this would be impossible.

Also... DNA and fingerprint identification is only possible if the dead person already has their DNA/fingerprints on government records.  Which is why dental records are mostly used as identification.

Although as MJ was arrested for child molestation it could be argued that his fingerprints and DNA do lie on government files somewhere as this would have been taken when he was arrested.

I watched it too.
the guy even said people came in to the room where the body was just to take a look..and yet, no pics :roll:

I think if it really pictures would give then for a long time these would have come to the general public
