Bizarre -- a pharmacist who testified he shipped MASSIVE amounts of Propofol to Dr. Conrad Murray in the weeks leading to Michael Jackson's death has disappeared without a trace, prosecutors claim.
According to prosecutors, Tim Lopez -- a former pharmacist at Applied Pharmacy Services in Las Vegas -- has mysteriously moved to Thailand and cannot be found.
Prosecutors now want a judge to let them use Lopez' previous testimony from the preliminary hearing (http://www.tmz.com/2011/01/04/michael-jackson-doctor-conrad-murray-preliminary-hearing-trial-witness-propofol-death/) in January -- when he claimed Dr. Murray ordered several large quantities of Propofol, beginning on April 6, 2009.
Two hearings have been set for next week to decide if the testimony will be permitted.

NO person can move, disappear, go on holiday or make themselves intentionally unavailable when knowingly knowing they will be asked to give evidence in court?
If so isn't that 'being in contempt of court'?...

"These scams are exploding. They're a huge issue for the department," said Shimon Richmond, a field agent with the Department of Health and Human Services.
It's not clear exactly how much money is being drained from the system by so-called "phantom pharmacy" schemes, but health care fraud already costs taxpayers and insurers more than $60 billion a year, federal officials say. Fraud is a key factor contributing to rising health care costs, they say.
Here's how the scheme typically works, according to experts: Criminals use a legitimate address to establish a fake pharmacy business -- which is essentially a shell operation.
Then, using stolen or otherwise-misgotten doctor ID and patient insurance ID numbers, scammers write fraudulent prescriptions for expensive drugs that were never actually prescribed or dispensed.
Next, they submit these fake prescriptions for reimbursement to insurers, Medicare or Medicaid -- for hefty returns. In a single claim, a fake pharmacy can make anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000, said Richmond, who's been investigating phantom pharmacy schemes in Florida for two years.
A promising way to control health costs
"These scams are 100% fraud, and we're seeing more and more of them," said Gary Cantrell, assistant inspector general for investigations with HHS. His office is pursuing hundreds of phantom pharmacy cases.
But regulators are having a tough time cracking down, because phantom pharmacies operate quickly and quietly. They may operate for as little as 60 days or as long as eight months, then disappear and pop up at a new address.
"Criminals quickly make large amounts of money, then close up and open up a new scam somewhere else," said Cantrell.
Another challenge for fraud-fighters: Since Medicare currently requires pharmacies to be reimbursed quickly -- sometimes in as little as two weeks -- fake claims may be paid out before they can be validated.
But even private insurers, which typically are better at preventing fraud, are falling victim to these schemes, federal officials say.
Phantom pharmacies also have a wider geographic reach than most other health-care scams, officials say. Scammers typically target Florida and California because they have large Medicare and Medicaid populations. But phantom pharmacies are spreading beyond these borders, they say, showing up in cities like Detroit, New York and Dallas.
Another obstacle for regulators is that trained health-care professionals may participate in the schemes. In some cases, corrupt doctors write prescriptions, or legitimate pharmacists operate a "phantom" business on the side, experts say.
Organized crime rings may also play a role. In one case, a group of people went to pharmacy school, then opened legitimate drugstores. Then they opened phantom pharmacies as well. Profits from these operations may flow overseas to fund money-laundering schemes, Richmond says.
"I've been in law enforcement for over 10 years," said Richmond. "There's just not enough of us to address this problem."

But phantom pharmacies are spreading beyond these borders, they say, showing up in cities like Detroit, New York and Dallas.
Another obstacle for regulators is that trained health-care professionals may participate in the schemes. In some cases, corrupt doctors write prescriptions, or legitimate pharmacists operate a "phantom" business on the side, experts say.
Organized crime rings may also play a role. In one case, a group of people went to pharmacy school, then opened legitimate drugstores. Then they opened phantom pharmacies as well. Profits from these operations may flow overseas to fund money-laundering schemes, Richmond says.
"I've been in law enforcement for over 10 years," said Richmond. "There's just not enough of us to address this problem."

I would also add that fake medicine have been sold in many countries leading to fatal deaths of patients who needed the medicine to live, as the case of insuline for diabetic patients.

Jacko Sued for Not Paying for His Meds TMZ has learned that a Beverly Hills pharmacy claims Michael Jackson ran up a $100,000 tab for prescription meds, but never paid.
TMZ has obtained the lawsuit (http://cdn.digitalcity.com/tmz_documents/m_jackson_prescripstions.pdf), filed Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, by drugstore to the stars Mickey Fine Pharmacy. The store, which often delivers its wares via motorcycle, alleges they had an oral agreement with Jackson to pay for any prescriptions they filled. The pharmacy claims Jackson made his last payment to them in mid-2005. According to the documents, the pharmacy made "repeated requests for payment." Perhaps Jacko thought that "oral agreement" was related to how to take the pills.
They are asking for the $101,926.66 they are owed, plus court costs and other relief. Jackson's asking for a glass of water and a napkin.
Calls to Jackson's reps were not immediately returned.

APS in Mobile was selling steroids to athletes, so selling propofol and other things to dr murray would not be strange for them.

According to the Press-Register, court documents indicate that APS shipped more than 762,000 dosages of anabolic steroids to 17 doctors and clinics from April 4, 2004, until Aug. 30, 2006.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Mobile contends that does not include many other doctors and clinics that they say participated in the conspiracy.
Those performance-enhancing drugs ended up in the hands of users ranging from professional athletes to teenagers looking to build body mass. Prosecutors cited 22 professional athletes who obtained steroids from Applied Pharmacy Services during the time Bennett worked there.
Dobbins told the paper that the steroids were powerful and weren't for human consumption.
<blockquote> "These steroids are for horses and cows, not for young people and humans," she said.</blockquote> Prosecutor referenced the five convicted pharmacists as, "drugs dealers in lab coats" and said they were also selling drugs approved only for use in livestock.
Carwin last fought for the UFC in July at UFC 116. He challenged Brock Lesnar for the promotion's heavyweight title. He was signed by the UFC in January of 2008 after he rolled to an 8-0 record between October of 2005 and December of 2007.
