Judge in Michael Jackson manslaughter case and defence spar
By Anthony McCartney (CP) – 38 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A judge overseeing the upcoming Michael Jackson trial has questioned defence attorneys about why they are not preparing reports and statements on possible witnesses.
Defence attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson, said at a hearing Thursday they don't plan to prepare any such reports before the trial scheduled to start in late March.
Prosecutors called the move a clear attempt to thwart rules intended to prevent surprises from occurring during trial.
Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor called the strategy "a recipe for disaster."
A prosecutor asked Pastor to vacate the trial date, but the judge refused.
He ordered attorneys to return on Monday, when potential evidence will be discussed again.

Conrad Murray Ordered Before Judge Considering Delay

The doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death is due in court today as a judge considers delaying the physician’s upcoming trial.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor has ordered Dr. Conrad Murray to appear at Wednesday’s hearing.
...
During two previous sessions, Pastor grilled Murray’s defense attorneys about why they haven’t turned more information over to prosecutors.

Pastor says he was “extremely distressed” by the lack of disclosure by Murray’s attorneys. But he has also requested case law that will support the prosecution’s request to delay the trial, scheduled to begin March 24.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and is seeking a speedy trial.

The Houston-based cardiologist’s attorneys have said they haven’t finalized their defense, and probably won’t until after the trial starts.
