This selection has many facettes.
Separating wheat from chaff - only good seeds will grow into seedlings.
Strengthening skin, mind, character, soul, heart, awareness, perception, judgement, self - only strong seedlings will grow into trees.
Confronting with the most evil realities on this planet - only oaks that don't mind scrubbing and drooling saws will grow 100 years old.
Loving parents or caring teachers do induce growth by training.
Parents don't choose their children - at first sight (although one may question that since nothing happens without any purpose). Spiritual masters usually do choose their disciples.
There may be rough times ahead.
The better we get prepared in an overall sound training, the better we will be capable of handling difficult situations in the future. Remember V and Evey?

Bec, I totally think you've got it, that the replacement is TS, caring for our well-being and hearts (2nd paragraph), not another performer --impossible to replace MJ.
Lastly, about the kids performing on stage or saying a speech, remember that Katherine said they have been taking acting classes!!
