why them?
February 03, 2010, 08:25:37 AM
sorry if this is not the appropriate forum place to post this, do whatever u like with these words:)
anyway, I was just wondering, why and who did choose people like Smokey Robinson( whose performance I personally didn't like it at all)
Celine Dion, Usher, Jen Hudson and Carrie Underwood to perform Michael's song?
I am really wondering why them, that apparently were not so close to Michael's work...
I could see better one of his sisters, Patti Austin, for examples, amazing Stevie Wonder, Kenny Loggins...but what the heck has to do sweet Carrie Underwood with Michael? and Celine Dion?....
This makes me think that Michael had NO power choosing any of them for his tribute, that it was all about the organisation and the records company itself...
what do u think?
LOVE. aldix

I have read somewhere, that Michael admired Celine Dion and Jen Hudson very much. Also Smokey Robinson and Usher.

Well I do have to disagree on the Smokey Robinson part. I love me some Smokey and the miracles. Those old motown songs are the best. Also Michael and his brothers made their song 'Whos Loving You' enormously popular. Can't say they did not have a connection.

The rest of them..hardly legends. I think Jennifer has an amazing voice but she lacks character. Celine..well she is just Celine. Usher..I would have prefered them to pick Ne-Yo since he did a beautiful tribute on the BET awards and sincerly seems to love Michael. Carry..not even known in Europe so have no real opinion on her.

I love Smokie Robinson, always have loved all those songs. His voice is something special. Thought he did a great job.

just wanted to point out that I like Smokey Robinson as well, and all the Motown music, don't misunderstand me please, it's just that it sounded kind of weird to me his performance into that specific Michael's song...
the others voices matches together in a certain way and style but SR was out of track,,just my super humble opinion :)

I read in a couple of places that those singers were chosen specifically. Smokey was one of MJ's mentors at Motown, so that one was a no-brainer to me. MJ likes Celine and Jennifer very much. Usher loves MJ and they have worked together before. I had read too that MJ likes Carrie.

Plus those artists represent a wide array of musical genres and appeal to fans of different age groups (i.e. crossover appeal). So it was a good mix to have people that MJ has respected as singers and who would appeal to lots of different people.

You can see a video here with Carrie talking about how she and the others were chosen.

I thought everyone knew that Michael and Smokey Robinson knew each other and were close. In fact, Michael sang one of Smokey's songs.

I thought they all did a great job and I thought it was especially fitting that Smokey was in there.

Celine and Michael sang "What more can I give" together.  She is a great admirer of Michael and he of her.

I've been following Celine's career since she was 12 'cause I'm a "quebecker",she's always been a huge Michael Jackson fan!The day he "died" on one of the Québec news channel, they interviewed her via phone and she was very emotional, she cried,it was very touching. She also talk about when he went to see her show in Vegas,he went to see her backstage and she was very honour that he came to see her sing.He asked her many questions about her show.He gave her a fedora that he singned that she said is very dear to her.(Don't know if he gave her that night or another time,I don't remember)

Just a thought, but perhaps it's to go beyond the Michael Jackson fans, through these people who he admired....in preparation for his return. That way Michael could gain support from their fans as well....in view of his Plan...

Just a thot.

Lots of L.O.V.E. to Michael... 8-)
