In Ear Monitors During J5 in This Is It
February 06, 2010, 12:01:01 PM
I was wondering if anyone thought the part where MJ was having a difficult time with his in ear monitors was kind of weird, since I think a seasonal professional who has been using them for years all of a sudden needs to get used to them. That part always made me think that MJ was an MJ look alike imposter who never used in ear monitors and doesn't know how.

What do you all think?

in my opinion he was a professional who didnĀ“t need or wanted the ear monitor cause he can count on his good hearing.

No, it's metaphorical. That was the real Michael during the J5 montage in TII. The speech was metaphorical to symbolise the media cramming information down our throats... "like a fist in my ear", forced to listen, etc. Notice he removes the ear pieces during this scene and never puts them back in. Only fake MJ wears earpieces after this scene in TII.

Sun comes up on this new morning
Shifting shadows, a songbird sings
And if you feel alone, I'll be your shoulder
With a tender touch, you know me so well
Somebody once said, it's the soul that matters
Baby, who can really tell when two hearts belong so well

I agree! before I became a believer i thought it was really odd and that he was trying to say something.. and Kenny was very formal with him at that moment and it felt like it was rehearsed! but when KO asks if he wanted to hear more of anything or W/E I didnt get that part? what do you make of that?

I wonder why sometimes Kenny was talking to MJ like he was a kid or something?

This is an excellent thought.  I had read a message regarding a conversation with one of the dancers (posted somewhere on this site) and the dancer said that Michael never wore a headset (didn't need to because his pitch was always spot on) but that Randy and Kenny insisted that he wear one because the O2 venue was different than he was used to. This was the dancers take anyway. He said Michael didn't like having to wear it.

when you get those ear monitors.. there is a volume control and of course any instruments can be adjusted to his desire. if he wants to hear the drums more they will enhance that sound
It is nothing strange, part of rehearsing and getting everything perfect

There is a HUGE trust level with ear monitors. You could kill someone if you control them incorrectly. My take is Mike did not want to wear as they are uncomfortable and would compromise his dancing equilibrium (let alone his regular balance and I hate to say it , try putting anything in your ear when taking painkillers and see where you end up... on the floor from nausea). Kenny's response was 'kid glove' to try and appease his complaint. But it didn't work.

it was to do with the face that This is it was going to be an indoors Concert.  other Mj concerts were all outdoors, which in that case he didnt really need ear monitors as the acoustics and sound would have been good and he could have heard everything clearly.  the monitors were because this was inside and the sound is different indoors

I understand the whole ear monitor thing and how and why it could be used i just was thinking if he was speaking metaphorically about the whole segment what would the rest be a metaphor for?

I've analyzed the whole scene from my own observation and opinion in this thread:
